Bali at Willinga Lodge & Spa |
Kosmos Picure Gallery |
The original villagers settled in Kosms during the 1920s. It is expected that the name comes from the Kosmos flowers that grow wild in the area. Originally Kosmos was a country village far away from the madding crowd, but over the years the village became very popular with Johannesburg and Pretoria weekenders. As roads and transport improved more up market fulltime residents settled in. Kosmos did not have many developments of commercial enterprises, although in earlier years the 'Sail Inn' on the shores of the Kosmos waterfront was a favourite getaway, until it burned down in the early 1960s. Later some art galleries and Lodges started to value the exclusive position Kosmos had to offer. The first art gallery was The Chris Tugwell gallery, still open to the public on
weekends. Other galleries like "The Village Art Gallery" and "Isabelle Le Roux Studio" followed . The first lodge in Kosmos was Willinga Lodge, and it was started by Will and Ingrid Laarman in February 1995 with 3 Suites, and it has since then grown over the years. The Lodge now has seven suites accommodating 14 - 16 guests, and it has a Day Spa set in their tropical gardens. The village has only one access road, and perhaps as a result has developed a strong sense of community. The residents subscribe to a security service which maintains the access gate to 'Kosmos Proper', a reference to that area lying within the boundaries of the original township. On the higher slopes of the village there is a handsome Community Centre and Library,
on municipal land. Next to it is a Garden Chapel, where non-denominational religious services are conducted regularly by the residents. The Chapel is popular for wedings and christenings as well On the waterfront near the entrance the residents have developed the Kosmos Marina Club also accessable for a quiet drink or to watch your favourite sport on a big screen. There are Post Boxes but no Post Office, and no shops or other commercial enterprises. |
